How do I get started/register for courses?

To start classes, we recommend you call and set a an appointment for a start date. We offer the first week of training at no charge so you can try it out. We generally like to speak to prospective students before their first class, so we will ask you to come a few minutes early the first time. Of course, you can also just drop by, but please realize that if we are instructing a class, you may have to wait until we finish to speak with us. We are located at: 554-C Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC 28801. If you can't stop by, give us a call at 828-216-4489 or send us an email at info@wncdefense.com

For Women's Self Defense courses or seminars that we are offering, simply go to "Our Courses" and find the event you want to register for. From there, click the "Register for this course" link and you will be taken to a registration and payment page. It's that easy!

What should I wear? Do I have to buy special equipment or clothes?

We don't use a specific uniform when we train. Some choose to wear workout clothes, while others will sometimes wear street clothes to see how techniques work in everyday wear. As a student, you will also be required to buy groin, mouth, and eye protection. These items may be purchased through from any store you prefer.

For Women's Self Defense classes, simply wear clothes that you would be comfortable working out in. No other special equipment is required.

For seminars, wear comfortable clothing based on the subject matter to be covered. Any protective gear that you are required to bring will be listed in the course description on our
seminars page.

Do you teach ground fighting at your school?

Yes, we understand the need to defend ourselves in the event we go to the ground. However, we are teaching real self defense, not sport fighting. Due to the dangers of the ground in a real attack, we always look to get up as soon as possible. The techniques we teach are based on this quick return to a standing position while causing damage to the attacker. While we do teach offensive use of a few common ground techniques, realize that the instruction is provided so that you can be a good attacker to your training partner. Furthermore, if you understand how a technique works offensively, you will understand better how to defend against it.

ICC

How is ICC Different from other Martial Arts?

Integrated Combative Concepts is not a traditional martial art. No katas. No rituals. No nonsense. Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest possible time. You'll learn to defend against chokes and grabs from all angles, punches and kicks, and weapons such as guns, knives, and bats. Just as important, ICC will teach you to function under stress, shock and adrenaline rush of a sudden, violent encounter. Our practical approach to self-defense will make you safer and more secure. And believe it or not, you'll have so much fun working out, you won't be able to wait for your next class!

Do ICC Classes involve conditioning exercises?

Because physical fitness is closely interwoven into the system, the workout includes a number of cardiovascular and strength building exercises, as well as stretching to increase flexibility. Emphasis is put on speed, endurance, strength, accuracy and coordination.

What if I have/have not taken martial arts before?

For many people, our school is their first experience in martial arts. However, we also have many students who come to train with us and have numerous years of experience in other systems. We will teach you what you need to know from the ground up, so no training background is no problem. Having said that, if you have a background in another system, you are welcome here. We only ask that you come with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

How long will it take for me to become proficient in ICC?

Integrated Combative Concepts, unlike many other martial arts, is a very fast-progressing system. A person of average physical capabilities can learn the basics fairly quickly. In fact, the system is designed so that in the first 18 months, which covers our first two levels of training, you will see defenses to the 20 most common street attacks.

Is there a Tournament Competition and a Belt system for ICC like Karate?

ICC does have a level system of advancement in expertise. However, there are no specific competition events for Commando Krav Maga like there are for other martial arts. Similarly, there are no katas in ICC. Each level carries with it various techniques that must be performed in a testing environment to advance to the next.

What if I am not sure about joining ICC classes?

You are always welcome to view classes to determine for yourself if ICC is right for you. Since you will get a better feel for our system by trying it out, we encourage everyone to take advantage of our ONE WEEK OF FREE classes offer. There is no obligation whatsoever if you do not feel our classes are what you need. Contact us to set up a convenient time for you to explore our training.

I don't have any knowledge of martial arts. Am I able to participate in the Rape Prevention course?

Absolutely! No prior knowledge of martial arts or self defense is required. In fact, most women who take our courses have no such background.

Can I really learn how to defend myself in a 4 hour course?

Yes you can. How? Because we do not try to teach you multiple techniques that you would be required to practice for months to become good at. Instead, we teach you theories and concepts that are easy to learn quickly and then retain for use in many different situations. We will teach you techniques, but with an emphasis on showing you how they apply the concepts we teach.

Do you teach women how to defend themselves against weapons in the 4 hour class?

No, we do not. Weapons defense is too technical and time consuming to be covered in a four hour class, especially with everything else we cover. However, we do teach women how to defend against weapons in our advanced rape prevention series, and even more in depth in our regular ICC classes.

Is it really possible for a woman to defend herself against a larger, stronger attacker?

It most certainly is. The principles of AWSDA and ICC are based on your attacker being larger and stronger than you. Because of this, we teach you to maximize your natural leverage advantage, how to generate power (and more than you think you have), and what targets to attack for maximum effect.
