Update on Women's Defense Courses

Finally, they're back! There was a bit more of a delay than first expected, but the Women's Defense courses are back and better than ever. You can now sign up for our next courses through our "Course Sign Up" page on the website.

The four hour basic course will be expanded to 4.5 hours, and will now take place on the following schedule:

The first Saturday of every month in Asheville, and
The last Saturday of every month in Hendersonville.

The class will be noticeably different. First of all, the time expansion will allow us to have a lunchtime discussion. In the past we have experimented with these discussions and they have been a huge success. Besides allowing for the women and instructors to get to know one another better, there have been many informative questions and discussions rise from this. Of course, we will provide the lunch.

In addition to the extended time, the content has also been changed based on information obtained from the survey that we conducted back in late winter, and also on information we have gathered from other instructors and recent participants in the course.

While we believe the previous course was good, after evaluating the techniques we discovered that many of them did not take into consideration the dynamic nature of a real confrontation. Many of the techniques taught were based on the attacker remaining static, which will not happen in the real world. In addition, several of the techniques in the old curriculum were hard to grasp in a four hour class. Even those who attended more than one class continued to have problems with some of the techniques. The techniques in question have now been changed or replaced to make them easier to learn, while maintaining or even increasing their effectiveness.

The third change that you will notice is the increased practice time. By better arranging and streamlining the curriculum, we were able to include more information (without being overwhelming) while also allowing women to have more time to practice. One way we streamlined was to make sure many of the techniques we teach can be used in multiple situations. By doing this, we can teach women a base technique, and then easily show them how to adapt it to other situations.

Our advanced courses are also in the final stages of redevelopment. They will be run once per week at each location (Asheville & Hendersonville)and will address situations and attacks that women are most likely to encounter. The basic 4.5 hour class will be a prerequisite to taking the advanced classes. Though the final scheduling is not complete, it looks like the advanced classes will run in 6-8 week blocks, each block covering a specific topic. The blocks will be:

Defense against chokes and strikes, to include punches, bats, pushing and dragging chokes (and other grabs), and simple kicks/stomps.

Defense against knife hold-ups and abductions.

Defense against gun hold ups and abductions.

Surviving on the ground in an attack.

There is a strong chance that we will split the strike/choke block into two separate blocks, one covering punches, bats, etc., and the other covering chokes and other grabs.

Each of these blocks will incorporate adrenaline stress response training, as well as improvised weapons. Each block will also end with a full contact class where you will be able to defend full force against an instructor in a padded suit.

As soon as the information on the advanced classes is finalized, I'll let you know more.
